The Roll out
The roll out will occur in different phases depending on the risk and age groups, as detailed below.
People in Phase 1a will receive the Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine and this will be administered by the Department of Health. It is hoped that roll out will commence in late February. People in Phase 1b will receive the AstraZeneca vaccine and this will be administered by selected GP practices. It is hoped roll out will commence late March. People in Phase 2a and 2b will receive the AstraZeneca vaccine and this will be administered by GP's and pharmacists. More information about the rollout can be found here. |
The Vaccine
Current there have been two vaccinations approve for use in Australia. 1) Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine. This has been provisionally approved by the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) for people 16yrs and older. Two doses will be required at least 21 days apart. This vaccine provides immunity for the disease but it is uncertain if it prevents the spread of the infection. 2) University of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. This is still to receive approval by the TGA. Based on current trials it is likely two doses will be required approximately one month apart. |
Side Effects
1) Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine: In trials this vaccination has been well tolerated. The worst side effects were fatigue and headaches after the second dose. (4%). People with severe allergies may have a more serious adverse reaction. 2) AstraZeneca vaccine: At this stage side effects are being reported as minor. Further reports will be made as experience increases. Note that flu vaccinations won't be given within 2 weeks of any Covid vaccination |
