Ear Microsuction

Ear Microsuction
We are delighted to introduce this service to St Agnes and Tea Tree Surgeries.

Ear microsuction is an ear wax cleaning technique using a high-powered binocular microscope and a gentle suction device. It is the same technique used by Ear, Nose and Throat specialists and is safer and usually superior to other methods.

Method
A disposable speculum (the same as when your ears are normally examined) is inserted into your ear canal. The ear canal and ear drum are then examined through the microscope. A suction tube is gently put into the ear canal and wax and debris is suctioned out under direct view until the ear is clear.  There are individual cases where ear syringing maybe the preferred method.

Before microsuction of the ear
You may be asked to use drops for several days beforehand, this can make the treatment easier for you.

During the procedure of microsuction of the ear
You do need to sit quite still. Despite all our efforts to be as gentle as possible, it will be noisy and occasionally may be a little uncomfortable. It rarely causes some short-lived vertigo (dizziness), lasting no more than a minute or so.

Who is suitable for the procedure?
Anyone who needs their ears cleaned and is able to sit / lie still is able to have ear microsuction (it is unsuitable for children under about 7 or 8). It is particularly good for 'Surfers Ear'. Hearing aid users ideally should have wax removed every 4-6 months.

Who performs the procedure?
A Doctor will perform the procedure. If your regular Doctor does not perform the procedure, he will make an appointment with of our other Doctors from the practice at a suitable time.

Please advise the receptionist that you wish to have you ear microsuctioned once you have spoken with your Doctor. A standard appointment time will be required.

Fees
The microsuction procedure fee is charged at the bulk bill rate.
If a consultation occurs this will be charged at the normal rates.

Making an Appointment
An appointment can be made after once you have spoken to your regular Doctor. Please advise the Receptionist when booking your next appointment that you require a Microsuction ear cleaning. This appointment can be made at either St Agnes or Tea Tree Surgery.
